Healthy Teeth

Good dental health is an important aspect of a child’s overall health.  More than 30% of 5-year old children in Yorkshire and Humber have dental decay.  This means in a year group of 50 children, 15 have dental decay.  Public Health England reported tooth decay was the most common reason for hospital admission for children aged 5 to 9 years-old in 2015 to 2016.

Children who have toothache may find it difficult to learn at school because they have pain, infection, and difficulties eating and sleeping.  They may need to have time off school (and parents may have to take time off work) to take them to a dentist or hospital.

The top 3 ways for protecting your child’s dental health are:

  1. Reduce the amount of sugary food and drinks your child eats especially between meals
  2. Brush teeth twice daily for two minutes and supervise your child doing this until age at least 7
  3. Take your child to the dentist every 6 months from when their first tooth erupts and ask them about fluoride varnishes.

If you can, try to arrange any dental and medical appointments after school or during the school holidays to reduce them missing school.
